It all started in 2019, when Liz tagged along with her church for a Build Day at our Silvercreek development. She had heard about Habitat for Humanity from her sister in law, who had participated in Women Build. After seeing it for herself, she signed up to become a volunteer right away.
Liz’s passion for volunteering didn’t start that day, “I was always the one home with kids, but they are all grown up now. My career was a professional volunteer.” Whether it was volunteering at her kids’ schools, sports teams, or church events…Liz has always been willing to step up to lend a hand, even if that means learning a new skill (or two).
With more than 1400 hours under her tool belt, Liz is proud of how far she has come with operating power tools and learning skills that she can put to use on her own home. “I have a property in BC that I spend the summers at and, because of my experience here, I was able to update the cedar shaking on the property myself.” She isn’t the only one benefitting from a new set of skills, her husband used to be the “handy” one at home, “Now I get to contribute more, and I tell him ‘The crew at Habitat would let me do it’.”
It’s not just the power tools that keep Liz coming back, “I also love the people. The volunteers I work with, the homeowners – it's so rewarding.” In her nearly 6 years volunteering with Habitat, she has helped build more than 45 affordable homes, impacting the lives of about 100 children!
There are lots of great ways in which you can donate your time to make an impact in the community just like Liz: see the opportunities here.
