Volunteer Spotlight: Dana

Posted by Habitat Admin on Jul 24, 2015 10:04:28 AM

Dana is a true adventurer. Now that her three boys have grown up she spends her days outside hiking, kayaking and working in the garden. When she isn’t off on some incredible adventure she can be found volunteering with the construction of new Habitat homes in Calgary, High River, or around the world as a Team Leader with Global Village.

Starting three years ago with a single shift per week, Dana now volunteers three times a week. As a construction crew leader, Dana works directly on the construction of new homes. She’s comfortable at almost every step in the construction process and helps teach the less experienced volunteers how to work safely and efficiently.

Dana didn’t begin volunteering at Habitat with an extensive background in construction; she learned almost everything from other construction crew members and Habitat training videos. What keeps her coming back is the positive atmosphere created by the other crew leaders and volunteers at the build sites. What’s more, Dana loves seeing the tangible difference her actions make in the lives of the homeowners.

Dana is an advocate for the annual Women Build Week, but she would like to see more women on the build site during the rest of the year as well. To people thinking of signing up for a shift with Habitat for Humanity she would like to say, “Sign up! Come out. Especially if you’re a woman. You don’t need any special skills, just a desire to learn.”

Thanks so much for all your hard work, Dana! We appreciate it!
