My husband and I are the proud parents of four beautiful daughters. Our lives changed dramatically when our last daughter Katie was born.
She was born four and a half months early and only weighed 530 grams. Katie spent the first year of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit hooked up to life support, and we spent that first year driving up to the hospital every day to see her. It was a very difficult time for our family. She eventually came home, but was on oxygen and had a feeding tube along with many other medical complications. We have been in and out of the hospital with Katie for the past four years.
Making ends meet
Due to Katie’s special needs, I was never able to return to my job as an accountant. Our lives then changed again as we went from having two steady incomes to support our family to only having the one. It’s been a struggle financially and with our rent being almost 60 % of our one income, it doesn’t leave much left over for all of the other expenses.
We heard of Habitat for Humanity through a friend of ours and thought we would apply. We were accepted into the program and are both extremely grateful and so very honoured to be a part of such a wonderful program.
“Home isn’t a place, but rather a feeling”
For our family, being a Habitat homeowner will change our lives immensely. Owning our home will provide us with stability and security. We feel blessed to have been given this opportunity and are very excited to have a home we can call our own. Home to us isn’t a place but rather a feeling.
We look forward to celebrating Katie’s milestones in our new home and celebrating family holidays. We look forward to creating new memories together as a family in our new home!
