After 16 years of renting the same apartment in downtown Calgary, Elsa is preparing to become a Habitat for Humanity homeowner. As she prepares to become an affordable homeowner, she’s looking forward to giving her children something every parent hopes for: a safe place to grow, belong, and build confidence.

Not every Habitat volunteer picks up a hammer.  

Sometimes, they show up with massage tables, volunteer at fundraising events, or find creative ways to support families long after the homes are built. For Sarah Tennent and Sam McGuire from Three Peaks Teaching and Research Clinic, giving back has become part of how they care for their community.

Volunteering is an important part of buying a home through Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. While 500 volunteer hours might sound like a lot at first, most Habitat homeowners find the experience rewarding.

Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta is honoured to receive the 2026 Calgary Award for Environmental Achievement in recognition of Habitat ReStore’s contribution to environmental stewardship and waste diversion.

Crew Leader Mario has become a familiar face on Habitat build sites in Southern Alberta. Since 2019, he has contributed nearly 1,800 volunteer hours building affordable homes, supporting fellow volunteers, and creating lasting impact for local families.
