Staying active after retirement

Marc might spend one week helping manage polling stations during an election and another setting up staging for a concert. In between, he is building theatre sets, preparing tax returns for families, or troubleshooting an irrigation system at a golf course—and then he shows up to lead on a build site.

Marc first volunteered with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta in May 2015 after retiring from a 37-year career with IBM Canada. Much of his professional life was spent helping introduce new systems and managing complex projects across Western Canada. He built teams, led initiatives, and saw projects through from concept to completion.

A lifetime of building

Building has always extended beyond his formal career. Over the years, he has completed basement developments, built garages and fences, renovated properties, and taken on projects that require patience and precision. Habitat offered a way to bring those skills into a setting where the impact is both practical and lasting.

Marc has now contributed more than 1,400 volunteer hours and serves as a Crew Leader. On site, he is known for his organization and attention to detail.

Build Days

Marc understands that for many participants, a Build Day is their first experience with construction. He takes the time to talk with volunteers, answer questions, and explain what they are doing and why it matters. His approach helps people feel comfortable picking up a tool, most for the first time.

As part of his volunteer role, Marc leads and teaches small groups of volunteers and homeowners on the build site.

When Industry Build and Women Build take place, Marc is often quick to add his name to the schedule, sometimes for multiple days. He shows up consistently, not only for regular shifts, but also when the organization needs additional leadership during large events.

Why he keeps coming back

Outside of Habitat, his volunteer commitments continue. He works with the Catholic Diocese of Calgary on young adult programs, supports community theatre groups with set builds and technical production, and volunteers with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Preparation program through CPA Alberta.

In addition to his volunteer work, Marc gives his time to local theatre groups.

He remains curious about history, global trends, and emerging energy technology, and he frequently pairs travel with international Habitat builds.

Coming back for more

When asked what keeps him coming back, his answer is simple and practical.

“I simply love the cause. A lot of organizations talk about housing challenges. Habitat actually does something about it. And as a volunteer, you get to be part of making that happen.”

Marc brings structure, experience, and steady leadership to every build site he joins. He helps create days where volunteers feel prepared, supported, and confident in the work they are doing.

That is what keeps projects moving forward. And it is what helps turn a single shift into something that lasts far beyond one day on site.
