NEWS RELEASE

CALGARY, AB — September 16, 2025 — Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta kicked off its annual Women Build fundraising event on September 16, with participants joining together to help complete affordable homes in Airdrie’s community of Bayview.

The event brings together women from all walks of life, including corporate leaders, tradespeople, and Habitat volunteers, to learn new skills, break barriers in construction, and make a lasting difference.

Dozens of women from a range of companies are rolling up their sleeves to help complete construction of 11 townhomes over three days. Event sponsors have already raised $97,000 in support of affordable homeownership across Southern Alberta.

This year’s event is made possible by the generous support of media sponsor CTV, Genesis Land Development, Shoemaker Drywall, Schneider Electric, Baker Tilly, Gordon Food Services, Morrison Homes, Star Building Materials, and Empire Envelope.

“Right now, one in five households in Southern Alberta cannot afford their housing. Women Build is our response to that reality,” said Gerrad Oishi, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. “By working side by side, women are helping families move into safe, affordable homes and building a future that is filled with possibility. Their time, energy, and support will help families put down roots in Airdrie and build stronger futures for their children.”

Affordable homeownership is especially critical for women-led families. Across Southern Alberta:

  • 41% of Habitat homeowners are single parents
  • 89% of those households are led by women

Once complete, the Bayview development will add $4.5 million worth of affordable housing to Airdrie’s supply. Families will purchase these homes through Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership Program, which requires no down payment, no interest, and affordable monthly payments—giving parents the opportunity to build financial stability, independence, and a brighter future for their children.
