Housing affordability is one of the biggest challenges facing young Canadians—and for Rehman, it’s personal. As a university student looking toward the future, the rising cost of homeownership has been on his mind for years. So when he discovered Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta during Clubs Week at the University of Calgary in 2024, something clicked.
“With the ability to participate in something tangible coupled with my concerns of housing affordability in Canada as a young adult, volunteering with Habitat seemed like the perfect choice in helping my community,” Rehman says.
Why pick just one?
Since October 2024, he’s contributed nearly 100 volunteer hours to Habitat, splitting his time between the ReStore Distribution Centre on Sundays, community engagement events, and his favorite role of all—working on the construction site. “It brings back memories of helping my dad with home renovations when I was younger,” he shares. “There’s something really special about learning hands-on skills while also contributing to a greater cause. I find it nostalgic and practical at the same time.”
Rehman says his motivation to keep showing up is simple: “I know by consistently showing up I can definitely make a change even if it’s little by little.”
More than just four walls
For him, the work goes beyond building walls. It’s about the meaning of home.
“To me, home is more than just a physical structure; it’s a place of emotional, mental, and physical security. It’s where I can reset, recharge, and prepare to face the challenges of everyday life. A stable home provides the foundation for everything else in life.”
A future career with impact
Rehman is entering his final year of a biochemistry degree at the University of Calgary, with plans for graduate studies, either medical school or a master’s program, and a career in clinical research to help improve lives. He also finds time for basketball, working out, gaming with friends, and mentoring through the First Generation Student Mentorship program.
Looking back on his volunteer journey so far, Rehman says,
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to volunteer with Habitat. It’s more than just building houses—it’s about building hope and investing in a stronger future for everyone. Every time I volunteer, I feel more connected to my community and inspired to continue giving back.”
