Habitat for Humanity brings community together to break ground on 24 affordable townhomes in Chestermere

Chestermere, AB – Today, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta broke ground on 24 affordable townhomes in Chestermere, spanning an entire city block in the Qualico community of Dawson’s Landing. Habitat was joined by dozens of donors, volunteers, and community partners to celebrate this milestone.

These homes will provide families with the opportunity to build a stronger and more stable future through affordable homeownership, while representing a $9.6 million investment in new affordable housing to Chestermere.

“We are very excited to be building in Chestermere for the first time and appreciate the incredible support and enthusiasm we are receiving from donors, community partners, and volunteers,” said Gerrad Oishi, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. “Our Dawson’s Landing development is more than a new city block of starter homes, it is a community where hard-working families can build stability through affordable homeownership.”

Every Habitat build is made possible by the ongoing generosity of donors, sponsors, partners, and volunteers. This year $437,568 was raised through our largest independent fundraiser, Ride Through the Rockies with all proceeds directly supporting the Dawson’s Landing project.

“Ride Through the Rockies is more than just an annual fundraiser; it’s a testament to the power of community coming together for a truly meaningful cause”, said Ken Crockett, VP Star Building Materials. “The funds raised through this event are a direct investment in building stronger futures for families in Southern Alberta. We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta’s mission, and we’re thrilled to see the generosity of our supporters in action, creating lasting impacts in places like Dawson’s Landing.

All Habitat Southern Alberta homes are constructed to meet or exceed energy and building code standards, with environmentally responsible designs and construction materials. Aviva Canada has also stepped in to become the exclusive Climate Resiliency Sponsor of the Dawson’s Landing project. Their significant contribution will fund hail-resistant materials, helping ensure the homes are equipped to withstand increasingly severe weather.

“Partnering with Habitat for Humanity on this project means helping families build more than just homes—we’re helping build safety and peace of mind,” said Susan Penwarden, Managing Director, Personal Lines at Aviva Canada. “By funding hail -resistant upgrades, we’re getting families ready to weather storms today and in the future, ensuring their homes are built to last.”

Habitat for Humanity is rising to meet the need for affordable housing in Southern Alberta. Last year, the non-profit developer and builder delivered more than $10 million in affordable housing, including projects completed or underway in Calgary, Airdrie, and High River. These homes in Chestermere are slated to be completed by the end of 2027. Families purchase their homes through Habitat’s no down payment, interest-free mortgages with monthly payments customized to each family’s income, enabling them to build financial stability and independence.
