Habitat celebrates completion of a full city block of affordable homes in Calgary

Today, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta celebrated the completion of a full city block of affordable housing. This $9.8 million development of row townhomes in the community of Livingston gives 24 hardworking Alberta families, including more than 60 children, the opportunity to build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. Twelve families have already moved in and all remaining families are anticipated to move in this fall.

“Over 35 years, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta has grown from building single homes to developing entire city blocks, responding to today’s urgent housing needs and helping more families,” said Gerrad Oishi, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta President and CEO. “We are excited to celebrate this milestone project and welcome families to their new homes and community.”

Since 2019, the Government of Canada has supported Habitat for Humanity Canada in reaching a goal of building 804 homes across Canada through a $65.1 million investment from the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund. This includes funding toward the Livingston homes in Calgary.
“Organizations like Habitat for Humanity are invaluable partners as we work to tackle the housing crisis and ensure that every Canadian has a safe place to call their own,” said The Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure. “I am proud that we could support these new homes in Southern Alberta and I wish the families the very best as they start their new chapters.” The Government of Alberta also supported the project, putting $2.4 million into the creation of the Livingston homes. Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, Jason Nixon, attended and spoke at the celebration event.

“Together with Habitat for Humanity, we’re building more than homes – we’re building stronger communities,” said Honourable Jason Nixon, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services. “These new homes in Livingston will help hardworking Alberta families achieve affordable homeownership and the security, independence, and stability that come with it.”
Generous financial support was also received from Sagen, Hockey Helps the Homeless, Prosser Charitable Foundation, Shaw Family Foundation, Honda Canada and the Sharon Danish Lutheran Church.

Najmuddiin is a Habitat homeowner who spoke at the celebration about what owning a home will mean to his family. “I have three children,” he said. “Having to move again and again has been difficult with children but now I am very happy that we will own our own home.”
Habitat for Humanity is rising to meet the need for affordable housing in Southern Alberta. In 2024, Habitat’s building program consisted of nearly $14 million in affordable homes in Calgary and Airdrie. In 2025, Habitat will be building in Chestermere for the first time and breaking ground on a new development in High River.

As part of their partnership with Habitat, families volunteer 500 hours, including time participating in the construction of Habitat homes and volunteering at Habitat ReStores.
