A Dream of Stability and a Place to Call Home
When Semhar moved to Canada, her main dream was a better life for her family. Her dream was a stable and secure future along with owning a home for her family.
A home would allow Semhar and her boys to not have to worry about the financial, mental, and emotional stress of constant moves.
Working Hard and Waiting Patiently
Their family has worked hard to achieve homeownership since moving to Calgary in 2018, which has been a life-long dream of Semhar’s.
Semhar originally applied for the Habitat homeownership program in 2022 before her application was put on hold. She waited patiently for years, working hard, becoming a student again, and raising her boys.
Balancing Work, Family, and Determination
Semhar works hard to provide for both of her sons. She currently works as a Personal Care Attendant at an old-age facility, working full-time hours, taking overtime shifts when they are available, while working a second job at least once a month.
Outgrowing Their Space
The family’s current home is a small townhome which amounts to nearly 40% of Semhar’s income. The home is small, and the boys are rapidly outgrowing the house.
They’re already looking forward to debating who gets which room in their new home.
A Future Full of Possibilities
Amanuel plans to continue living with his mom and brother following his upcoming high school graduation. He isn’t sure about post-secondary, which is something that the family never thought they would be able to consider before.
What Home Truly Means
Their Habitat house will not just be a place for the family to live, it will be “home”. To Semhar and her boys, Home is a place where worries melt away and time with family can be enjoyed.
“Home is more than a roof over your head. You don’t have to worry about things. When you have a home, life is easier.”
The family spends as much time as they can together during their free time both at home and on the go. They enjoy going to the movies, swimming, the park to play sports, and just spending time together drinking coffee.
With their future secure, the family eagerly anticipates their move and how their lives will change, but also be the same in their own space, for the coming years.
