Affordable homeownership is a growing challenge, but the next generation of changemakers is stepping up to tackle the affordability crisis head-on. At the University of Calgary, the Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter is proving that students have a powerful role to play in creating sustainable housing solutions.

Keep reading to see how these students are making a tangible impact in the community through leadership, advocacy, and hands-on volunteering.

Turning passion into action

For some members of the campus chapter, the journey to Habitat started in high school. For others, it began with a passion for community service and a desire to be part of something bigger. For Jack Jones, third-year international relations student and co-founder of the campus chapter,

“Growing up in Houston, Texas, I saw firsthand how economic disparities impacted families’ ability to own homes, and I believe that everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to live.”

Regardless of how they got involved, each student leader is driven by a shared mission: to raise awareness about the growing need for affordable housing and rally their peers to take action.

What started as an idea between a few students has grown into a thriving movement. The UCalgary Habitat for Humanity Chapter didn’t just join the conversation about affordable housing—they created a platform for students to make a difference.

Their team has organized Build Days and helped bring Habitat’s mission directly to campus, making it easier for students to get involved.

"The primary objective of the Habitat for Humanity UCalgary Chapter is to raise awareness about the disparities Habitat addresses, educate the community on the organization's mission, and promote volunteer opportunities," said Khadija Raja, fellow cofounder, who is also pursuing her Bachelor of Science.

"This semester, we also aim to organize fundraising events to support this vital cause and enhance community engagement and awareness for Habitat."

Making a real impact

This isn’t just about spreading awareness—it’s about rolling up their sleeves and making a difference. Students from the chapter have volunteered at Habitat’s Livingston 24 build site and have represented Habitat at events around Calgary and area.

Their commitment is evident in their enthusiasm.

“I wanted to work with people in our community and beyond to help build or improve a home where they can feel safe and supported,” said Tiffany Mok, third-year international relations student and vice-president of events. “It’s been an incredible opportunity to collaborate with like-minded peers and contribute to such an impactful mission.”

Through social media outreach, fundraising, and hands-on participation, these students are ensuring that Habitat for Humanity’s mission resonates with the next generation.

The students are focused on building a movement that will last long after they graduate.
