Presented by the City of Calgary, the award recognizes leadership, innovation, and action that advances the goals of Calgary’s Environment Strategy.
A second life for thousands of items
Every year, thousands of donated items find a second life through Habitat ReStore. Furniture, appliances, home décor, building materials, cabinetry, lighting, flooring, and more are donated by individuals, businesses, builders, and community partners, then purchased by shoppers looking for affordable and sustainable options for their homes and projects.
In 2025 alone, Habitat ReStores diverted more than 3,900 tonnes of material from local landfills.
That impact is made possible through individual donations, circular economy partnerships, and operational practices designed to maximize reuse whenever possible. Showroom models, overstock inventory, construction off-cuts, and other surplus materials are given a second life rather than becoming waste.
Environmental stewardship in action
The award recognizes more than just the volume of material diverted from landfill.
Behind the scenes, ReStore works to ensure materials are managed responsibly at every stage. This includes recycling programs, metal recovery, and the proper disposal of materials that cannot be resold or reused.
These efforts help extend the life of valuable resources while reducing the environmental impact of disposal.
Where environmental impact meets social impact
What makes Habitat ReStore unique is that environmental impact creates social impact.
Revenue generated through ReStore helps fund Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta’s affordable homeownership program. Every donation and purchase contributes to both environmental sustainability and stronger communities.
The same dining table, appliance, or bundle of building materials that stays out of landfill also helps create opportunities for local families to access affordable homeownership.
A community achievement
This recognition belongs to the donors, shoppers, volunteers, staff, and community partners who make ReStore possible.
Together, they have helped create a model where sustainability and community impact work hand in hand.
We are grateful to the City of Calgary for this recognition and proud of the community that made it possible.
Together, we’re building what’s next.
