A Growing Family Searching for More Space in Calgary
The family first applied for a Habitat home more than six years ago, back in 2019 when they moved to Calgary. They have outgrown their home, having had two of their children born since immigrating to Canada from Djibouti.
Kids Excited for Their Own Bedrooms and a Backyard
Their children, Aminat, aged 7, Mahir, aged 4, and Liyana, aged 2, cannot wait to have their own rooms. They are already planning on what colours they are going to paint the walls and playing in their very own backyard. One of the features of their Habitat home they are most eagerly looking forward to are multiple bathrooms, so they all have enough time to get ready in the mornings.
Challenges of Their Current Overcrowded Apartment
In their current home, the boys sleep in one room and the girls in the other. They are all feeling very cramped in their walk-up apartment, which presents other challenges including getting bikes down to the road and many trips up and down the stairs with the family’s groceries.
Learning About Habitat Through Family and Beginning the Application Journey
Hussein learned about Habitat from his cousin, who is a Habitat homeowner as well, and first applied back in 2019 when he and Fatuma first came to Canada. After a long journey to approval for Habitat’s homeownership program, the family is now counting down the days until they will be moving into their home.
Looking Forward to a Brighter, More Stable Future
“I am just so happy for my family.”
