Build homes. Build community. Make an impact.

Help build safe, decent and affordable homes for local families with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta!

Our construction volunteers work alongside Habitat staff, skilled tradespeople, Crew Leaders and fellow volunteers to help bring homes to life. Whether you’re an experienced DIYer or have never picked up a hammer before, you can make a difference on our construction sites.

No previous construction experience is required. We provide the training, guidance and support you need to get involved and feel confident on site.

What does a Construction Volunteer do?

Construction volunteers help with a variety of hands-on tasks, depending on the stage of the build. You may:

  • Help with framing and basic construction tasks
  • Install insulation and drywall
  • Paint and finishing work
  • Help with landscaping and site cleanup
  • Move and organize materials
  • Use basic hand and power tools under supervision
  • Keep work areas clean and safe

Every day on site is a little different, but you’ll always be part of a team working toward something meaningful: building homes, communities and hope.

Who can be a Construction Volunteer?

We’re looking for volunteers who are:

  • 16 year of age or older
  • Reliable, enthusiastic, and willing to learn
  • Comfortable working as part of a team
  • Able to follow safety instructions and direction from Habitat staff and Crew Leaders
  • Comfortable working in a physically active environment
  • Ready to get their hands dirty and have some fun!

We provide ongoing training and support so you feel confident on site.

What should I expect?

Construction volunteering is active and hands-on. Volunteers should be comfortable:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods
  • Bending, kneeling and reaching
  • Lifting and carrying materials
  • Working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Performing repetitive physical tasks

Construction shifts are generally one full day. You can sign up for shifts that work with your schedule, whether you want to volunteer occasionally or become a regular member of our construction volunteer team.

“This was my first time volunteering with Habitat, and it was such an amazing experience. Everyone was incredibly kind and helpful, and being able to do hands-on work felt really rewarding. I’m definitely looking forward to participating in future builds whenever my schedule allows!”
