Cost of Home
Help make the Cost of Home something every family can afford
Donations to Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta make a lasting difference. When families have access to affordable homeownership, they can plan for the future, save money, and improve their job opportunities. Your support helps build stronger, more stable communities across Southern Alberta.

Families are paying too much for a place to live
Housing costs keep climbing, but wages haven’t kept up. Families are working hard and still struggling to cover the basics. When rent or mortgage payments take up most of the household budget, there’s little left for food, childcare, or savings for the future.
At Habitat for Humanity, we believe no family should spend more than 30% of their income on housing. But right now, almost 1 in 5 families live in homes that are unsafe or unaffordable*.
A safe home should never come at the cost of your child’s future. When a home costs families everything, that price is too high.

Working hard for a safe, stable home
My name is Iqra. My husband, Muhammad, and I believe that when we work hard, our children’s future will be brighter than ours.
Muhammad works full time while completing a diploma in Supply Chain Management. I work part time as a healthcare aide while studying to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. We’re raising two young kids—Zaviyar (6) and Zarnish (3)—and we’re completing 500 volunteer hours with Habitat to buy our first home.
I tell myself every day:
“When you work hard, it pays off for our kids. They won’t have to struggle like we did. We can do it, we just have to push ourselves. This home is proof that hard work and hope can build something lasting.”
We applied to Habitat four times. In 2024, we were approved to purchase an affordable home in Airdrie. For the first time, our children will have one safe place to grow, learn, and make memories that won’t be lost to another move.
No parent should have to choose between paying rent and buying food.
A safe home is as important as food, clothing, and health. Without it, it’s hard to move forward.
Many families are still waiting for the same chance. Nearly 1 in 5 families in Southern Alberta live in housing that is unsafe or unaffordable.
Your gift helps build safe, affordable homes so children like mine can thrive.

The difference Habitat homeownership makes
85%

64%
said their monthly housing expenses decreased since moving in.
79%
said their Habitat home is safer than other places they have lived.
Five years from now, we’ll have our own home and our own space. Our kids will get to stay in the same school and grow up with their friends, instead of moving from place to place.
